Prayer for Healing After Miscarriage

March was Pregnancy After Loss Awareness Month, and no, I’m not fooling you, today is the first day of April! As we close out March and enter into April, I wanted to share an absolutely beautiful prayer that I heard for the first time last month in light of Pregnancy After Loss Awareness.
I think one of the hardest things to come to terms with after a miscarriage is just plain “WHY?” - a question that neither you, nor any healthcare providers, nor friends or family may ever be able to answer. We can only hope for the day that we “will see our little ones again up above” (St. Zélie Martin) in Heaven. The harsh reality is that our children are not our own; they are the Lord’s. He gives and He takes away, and that timing is not up to us. If our ultimate goal as parents is to raise little saints and to get their souls to Heaven, maybe miscarriage is just God’s quick route to bringing those souls to eternity with Him. But MAN, that does not discount how hard to see that second line on the pregnancy test, visualize your family with another child, picture that baby’s face, imagine their voice, and get excited to meet them outside the womb, only to lose that baby before you ever got a chance to meet him or her. And it can be hard to imagine being pregnant, or to be pregnant, after such a loss.
Grieving after miscarriage can be an intense journey that requires much healing, regardless of how many weeks old the baby was in the womb, and not everyone experiences that grief in the same way. It’s important to give yourself and your loved ones the grace and patience to work through the stages of grief while trying to heal spiritually, physically, and emotionally. Mother Angelica wrote a prayer for those experiencing miscarriage that expresses the heart’s cry after such a loss. Whether you or a loved one are pregnant after miscarrying, trying to conceive after a loss, not sure if you’re ready to try again, or just simply trying to navigate the waves of grief after losing a precious baby, I hope this prayer can provide some hope, peace, healing and comfort.
“My Lord, the baby is dead!
Why, my Lord – dare I ask why? It will not hear the whisper of the wind or see the beauty of its parents’ face – it will not see the beauty of Your creation or the flame of a sunrise. Why, my Lord? “Why, My child – do you ask ‘why’? Well, I will tell you why.
You see, the child lives. Instead of the wind he hears the sound of angels singing before My throne. Instead of the beauty that passes he sees everlasting Beauty – he sees My face. He was created and lived a short time so the image of his parents imprinted on his face may stand before Me as their personal intercessor. He knows secrets of heaven unknown to men on earth. He laughs with a special joy that only the innocent possess. My ways are not the ways of man. I create for My Kingdom and each creature fills a place in that Kingdom that could not be filled by another. He was created for My joy and his parents’ merits. He has never seen pain or sin. He has never felt hunger or pain. I breathed a soul into a seed, made it grow and called it forth.”
I am humbled before you, my Lord, for questioning Your wisdom, goodness, and love. I speak as a fool – forgive me. I acknowledge Your sovereign rights over life and death. I thank You for the life that began for so short a time to enjoy so long an Eternity.” - Mother M. Angelica
Praying for all of you who have lost your precious children far too early. May God bless you throughout your grieving and on your journey to healing, wholeness, and restored health and fertility.
